Choosing which airbrush to use

SINGLE OR DOUBLE ACTION AIRBRUSH FOR AIRBRUSH TATTOOS?

This is a great question, and one that deserves a little research.
Before beginning your venture, you really need to make sure that you choose
the right airbrush for the job.

What types of airbrushes are there?

Basically there are 4 different types.

• Suction feed airbrushes
Suck the paint from a jar that attaches to the bottom of the airbrush.
• Gravity feed airbrushes
Draw paint from a cup that is at the top of the airbrush.
• Single Action airbrushes
Have only 1 action, you can only push the trigger down, activating the air and paint feed at the same time.
• Double Action airbrushes
Have 2 actions, you push the trigger down for air, and then pull the trigger towards you to draw paint.
These type allow greater control over whatever it is that you are airbrushing.

Of these 4 types, manufacturers often mix and match.

So, for example you could have a Double Action airbrush that is Gravity fed.
You can also get a Double Action that is Suction fed.

Here is a list :

• Suction Fed Single Action airbrush
• Suction Fed Double Action airbrush
• Gravity Fed Single Action airbrush (not many of these around)
• Gravity Fed Double Action airbrush

For airbrushing tattoos, it is recommended that you use either a Suction Fed Single Action airbrush or a Suction Fed Double Action airbrush.

I choose Suction Fed airbrushes because usually, you won\'t need to change colours very often.

You just fill your jar up at the beginning of the day, and empty it at the end of the day.

Additional colours can be used in additional airbrushes, or by swapping jars over.

The next thing that you want to make sure of, is that the airbrush will spray a thicker type of medium, of which most airbrush tattoo paints are.

Make sure you\'re not using an airbrush specifically designed for detail, the paint will take too long to flow through, if at all, and you\'ll be spending more time cleaning it out to make sure it is spraying properly than you will airbrushing tattoos.

A good Suction Fed Double Action airbrush with a medium sized needle and tip is what you will need.

There are many different brands on the market and rather than go through them all here, because it is essentially personal preference anyway, I have just explained the difference in the types you can buy.

You will also want to make sure that you buy an airbrush from a supplier that is reputable and can supply you with parts for your new airbrush. In the case that you ever bend your needle or ruin the needle tip, ( and trust me you will one day) you want to make sure that you only have to buy a replacement part rather than a replacement airbrush!

So go and check out your local art store, get on the web and visit a few forums, get as much information as you can, to feel confident that you are buying the right tool for the job.
