A Discussion On Various Nail Fungus Treatments

The main concern is the nail discoloration (usually yellow) and change in nail texture and growth. Nails can become crumbly, break easily, and grow irregularly. However, because other nail conditions sometimes mimic fungal infection, most doctors will confirm the diagnosis by sending a nail clipping for laboratory evaluation -- especially if treatment is being considered.

Toenails and fingernails are hiding places for dirt and germs, and can become a home for infection-causing fungi. Fungi are plant organisms, such as mold and mildew. An infection of the nails can be fungus invading the nail and
actually living off of it. A fungal infection is one of the most difficult nail conditions to treat. Its symptoms include thickening and discoloration of the nail. In some cases, the nail may crumble.

The first sign of a fungal infection of the nail is a change in color. The nail often becomes yellow then brown. It gets thicker and develops a bad odor. Debris may collect beneath the nail and white marks frequently appear on the nail. The infection can spread to other nails and even the skin.

Toenails are affected more frequently than finger nails and is likely to happen more frequently with age.

Medications for nail fungus fall into two categories; topical and oral. There are any number of effective topical medications available over the counter. Topical medications are most helpful in treating early, small infections and
for maintaining clear nails. Topical medications do have a limited ability to penetrate the nail to reach all of the fungal elements. Topical medication inhibit the growth of the fungus allowing for faster growth of the nail. Remember, the fungus doesn\'t take a day off. Compliance is a big issue when using topical antifungals.

Topical Treatment Advantages

Topical Treatment Disadvantages

\"Requires multiple applications daily for an extended period of time

\"Treatments can cause superficial damage to surrounding skin

\"Topical solutions can be messy, have bad
odors

Oral anti-fungal Advantages

\"More likely to provide a cure than topical options

\"More effective on stubborn toenail fungus

\"Typically one pill a day

Oral anti-fungal disadvantages

\"In rare cases, life-threatening side effects have been reported

\"Require a prescription, more expensive than topical treatments
