The Importance of Backing Up Your Files! (AND How To Do It!)

As a Newsletter Publisher, I receive many questions. One of
the questions I receive the most, though, is in regards to
backing up your files, specifically, your web site.

Backing up your web pages should be no problem. The average
web page is 30-40 KB, although I did see one that was
actually 700 KB. That is a LARGE page. Too large! However,
those will fit on a floppy without any problem.

The problem is your .exe, .pdf, etc. files. These can be
and often are larger than what a standard floppy can hold.

There are a number of software programs that can help.

1. Power Archiver:

With a modern easy-to-use interface, PowerArchiver provides
support for most compressed and encoded files, as well as
access to many powerful features and tools. This downloads
in a self-extractable .exe format and is shareware. It
costs $19.95 to get the registered version.
Check it out here: http://www.powerarchiver.com/

2. WinZip:

WinZip brings the convenience of Windows to the use of Zip
files and other compression formats. The optional wizard
interface makes zipping and unzipping easier than ever.
This downloads in a self-extractable .exe format and is
free. A single-User License costs $29.00. Get it here:
http://www.winzip.com opthema/

In some cases, you will have a problem installing Ver. 8.1.
If you receive an error message similar to the following:
"WinZip Self-Extractor unable to create a temporary folder
to extract to. etc.", do not give up hope. There appears
to be a problem with the newer version. You can download
the older version from me. Just click here:

3. WinRAR:

The best of the best! Using WinRAR puts you ahead of the
crowd when it comes to compression by consistently making
smaller archives than the competition. You can download an
evaluation copy or purchase a registered version for $29
http://www.rarsoft.com/

I have only listed three of the best here. To check out
many other possibilities go to: http://www.keyscreen.com/
Then click on the File Manager link. You will find many
other shareware and freeware applications here as well.

In some instances, none of the above programs will be able
to help you. Why? Because some HTML Editors do not create
separate files. The HTML code and all files associated with
the page are included in one large file. Even after
compressing into an archive file (.zip, .rar, .arc, etc.),
the file is still too large.

This may help in these cases.

File Splitter:

This splits files into pieces so they can be moved onto
floppy disks between systems. The program creates a batch
file that is easily reassembled on another PC or back on
yours. You do not need to have it installed on both
machines to transfer files.

You can download File Splitter FREE here:

It is important that you get into the habit of backing up
your files and websites on a regular basis. Just having
things stored on your hard drive is not enough. A computer
crash or hard drive failure can wipe out everything. I
know this from experience. My hard drive failed and could
not be restored. Fortunately I had everything backup on
CD's or I would have lost years of important files.

Please, don't make this simple mistake!

Backup everything at least once a week. Daily is better.
At the absolute minimum, backup your data files daily.

If all else fails - buy a CD-RW!
